Hi there We recently conducted user requirements gathering, of which we heard loud and clear that our current search engine is of poor performance. The emergence of Web 2.0 also raised user expectations of how search should work and we are committed to researching our options. Through our Government agency contacts and external relationships we have gathered some information regarding google appliances - but in order to conduct due diligence, we are needed to investigate open source options. Is any Government agency out there currently using an open source search solution? If so, we'd be most grateful to receive your feedback about the practicalities of using it within your intranet environment, of particular urgency is... What is it called? Was it cost competitive? Would you recommend it? And if you're supportive, would you be happy to chat to our Network/IT team in more detail? It's great to see you investigating this - I'm just sorry that we don't see more of it. > Is any Government agency out there currently using an open source search > solution? I'm not aware of government agencies using this (although they might well be), but the Drupal platform which my business implements (probably the most widely implemented open source platform within NZ govt) offers tight integration with a open source enterprise search platform called "Solr". It's use, however, is not limited to Drupal - it offers a web service which can be integrated with any web-based technology. You (or your IT team) can find more information on here: http://lucene.apache.org/solr/ Solr is part of the open source Apache project (the Apache webserver is the most widely used webserver platform in the world by a wide margin, i.e. it is used to serve about 60% of all websites on the internet). Solr is a best-of-breed web search technology, and should be considered for any similar requirements. There are commercial Solr providers, e.g. Acquia (http://acquia.com), or you could engage one of the many commercial vendors in NZ who specialise in implementing and supporting such systems either within our externally (as a webservice) to your agency. > And if you're supportive, would you be happy to chat to our Network/IT > team in more detail? Feel free to contact me for referrals if you like. Kind regards, Dave Lane
