Hi everyone,
It's Rebecca from the Reserve Bank. I am hoping you guys can help me - we are
keen, as part of our internal communications strategy, to create a blog for our
Senior Management Group (SMG) and was wondering if any of you out there have a
similar style blog who could tell me: how it's maintained (and who maintains it
- is it ghost-written by Comms etc), the frequency it's published and where it
fits on your current Intranet ? And any other pieces of advice you've got in
regards to this type of thing.
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you all :-)
Cheers
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
We have a ghost written column in our weekly inSite news - called 'The View
from the Front' which our Comms manager writes in conjunction with the CEO.
We took the view that the CEO is away a lot or 'too busy' to be left to
maintain a blog by themselves - so we've found ghost writing a good method.
Goes to the homepage of the site every Friday at 4pm, then available via an
archive.
Cheers
Rich

Hi Michael
We're looking at a blog of this nature, as another way for our Governor and SMG
members to communicate with our staff. A staff survey at the end of last year,
indicated that staff wanted to hear from the Governor and SMG on a more regular
basis (currently the Gov presents monthly to staff in an informal manner) and
the idea of blog surfaced as an innovative way to communicate to staff within
the Bank. Ideally, the blog is another avenue of communication that is more
open and informal than what we've got at the moment, and at the same time
inform and engage staff.

Thanks Rebecca ... so is your Governor and SMG willing to read the comments and
respond personally? From my view, this would be essential for it to be a
credible "other way" for informal interaction and real engagement. Obviously,
there is a time commitment to doing so.
Has this been explored?

Not as yet - this was just discussed in yesterday's Senior meeting and they've
asked for examples of these types of blogs, what they look like visually and
how other organizations handle issues as you've mentioned below.

Hi Rebecca,
The Police Commissioner has a blog on our intranet, however it's a blog in name
only.
Some salient points:
-Comments are not enabled. If they were though, I would recommend that they
were indelibly tied to employees - no anonymous posts.
- The Commissioner writes the internal blog himself. This is good as it
captures his voice, however it has pitfalls.
-One is the infrequency of posts. He tries to post one every fortnight, but it
can be two or three months between posts.
-Also, he writes about two scrolls worth of content per post, on multiple
topics. We've tried to tell him that this could be split over two or three
posts, but to no avail.
-Anecdotally, few staff read the blog, but those that do read it value it
highly. It is more likely to be read by senior staff.
I hope that this is of some use to you. If you're interested, you could visit
Police HQ here in Molesworth street and have a look.

Hi Rebecca,
We are planning to launch our CEO Blog next week. The intent is that the CEO
will write it himself on a monthly basis (but can do so more often if and when
wants to comment on something specific).
The reason it will be from the CEO and not from 'senior management' is that it
has come about in response to staff asking for more direct communication from
the CEO himself (something that came through strongly in the intranet
requirements sessions we held with staff). We did discuss the idea of expanding
to be able to be authored by anyone in senior management but decided that would
be contrary to what the staff had asked for and would water down its impact.
In terms of managing feedback, our starting point will be that staff can post
unmoderated comments to keep the two-way communication as open and honest as
possible.
In terms of where it fits in our intranet, it will be under the area that deals
with 'our internal community/culture', and sits alongside but separate from the
internal comms/ news area.
As we haven't gone live yet we will no doubt learn a few things along the way,
but I'm happy to share our experiences if you wish to contact me. :)
By the way (and it's only in case you are interested) our intranet is built on
SharePoint (MOSS 2007).
Cheers,
Bruce Harrison

Hi Hamish
This is all really useful and definitely provides me with things to consider
moving forward.
It would be great to come and take a look at what you have. I'll contact you
to arrange a time and date.
Thanks again.

Hi Rebecca - you say that your staff indicated they wanted to hear from the
Governor and SMG on a more regular basis. From my personal experience with
these kinds of senior management attempts to 'connect' with their staff I have
found that there is always insufficient understanding of what it is and why it
is that the staff are wanting to hear from their leaders. Inevitably the CEO
goes to the effort of writing a blog or a newsletter or similar and is then
frustrated to hear that no one is reading it.
My advice therefore would be to do some specific and further research into what
your staff actually want to hear and why they want to hear about it before you
decide on the details of a delivery mechanism. You have to answer the "What's
in it for me" question for your staff if you want it to be successful.
Good luck.
